Our first grade and second grade Reading Intervention Students are participating in a LEXIA CLUB!  On Monday and Tuesday mornings, students meet in our computer lab for 20 - 30 minutes and practice their reading skills on the LEXIA CORE 5 Program!  Our students worked hard during the first half of our school year and I couldn't be more excited about the progress some students are making!  BE PROUD!!

Grade-level Guided Reading:  Again this year, our second, and third grade classes will be involved in grade-level guided reading!  Each week, during their guided reading times, the two grade-level classes will combine for reading activities.  Second grade students will participate in four, hour-long sessions each week.  Third grade students will participate in three, hour-long sessions each week.  During guided reading times, students will work on learning new reading skills, "word-work", journal writing, and readers' response activities off of their "good-fit" books.

Kindergarten:  Our Kindergarten students meet with Mrs. Swanson in her room for two sessions each week.  During this time, we will focus on:  letter identification fluency, letter sound fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency and blending CVC words.

First Grade:  Our first grade students meet in Mrs. Swanson's room for two sessions each week.  During

this time, we will "warm-up" by practicing our reading skills by using a program called PALS - First Grade.  This reading program focuses on:

*Increasing our oral reading fluency!

*Practicing the blending of CVC words:  (consonant/vowel/consonant):  example: map, fob, het, haz, sup, wig,

*Reviewing our first grade high frequency words

During each session, we will also read from high-frequency word passages helping our brain to take a picture of these commonly read words!  This helps our fluency rate increase!

**We are using Lexia Core 5!!** We have started a LEXIA CLUB for our second grade reading intervention students.  Our club meets on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 8:30 - 9:00 in our computer lab.  LEXIA is a computer-based reading program in which students work at their instructional level to complete activities centered around a variety of phonetic skills.

Second Grade:  Our second grade students meet in Mrs. Swanson's room twice a week and work with a program called 6 Minute Solutions.  During this time, we will focus on increasing our oral reading fluency!  We will begin each session with a word list containing 60 high frequency words.  Student will practice these words in their "whisper voices" and together orally.  After practice, they will read them orally with the goal of finishing their list accurately in one minute.  Next, the students will read a story passage.  This week, our story passage is:  Our Country's Government.  After reading the story orally together and silently in their "whisper voices", students will read it again orally, only this time being timed for one minute.  We will then record the number of correct words read per minute on a graph which we keep in our reading folder.  Students get excited to see how their reading fluency increases each time they read a passage!
